Cruisers, Softails and Bobbers

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Street Bob® 114 and the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Fat Bob® 114 share much in common, so let’s begin there. Both belong to the Cruiser family. Cruisers are iconic American motorcycles that emphasize easy riding, but the category is rather broad and has become broader over time. What separates the Street Bob® and Fat Bob® from many other cruisers is that they’re bobbers and softails. Bobber refers to the front and rear fender being bobbed and the minimalistic approach to the overall design. Softail refers to the rear suspension, which is designed for a more comfortable ride.

Street Bob® 114

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Street Bob® 114 is a step up from the Softail Standard, which is a cruiser and a Softail obviously but not a bobber. The goal with the Street Bob® design is to remain as true as possible to the classic bobber look and feel. It has mini-ape style handlebars for taller and more upright riding. It has a smaller bobber-style headlamp and a standard front fork with a single disc. It comes with mid foot controls standard but can be swapped to forward control for taller riders or those who plan longer rides. It weighs 655 pounds wet, is powered by the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 engine and ships with two-up riding.

Fat Bob® 114

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Fat Bob® 114 is a step up from the Street Bob®, which is reflected in the price. With the Fat Bob®, Harley-Davidson® is less concerned with classic bobber style and willing to take more stylistic chances. It features a wide headlamp, which has become a signature element. It has handlebars that are similar to drag bars but a bit curved and pulled back. The Fat Bob® features an inverted front end with dual discs. It has a more robust suspension overall in addition to an external rear suspension adjustment, which is nice if you plan to take advantage of two-up riding often. It also has the 114. It doesn’t weight much more at 675 pounds and has an analog/digital tach as opposed to just digital.

Riding Characteristics and Performance

Performance is similar since they both have the 114 and similar weight. The Street Bob® has a more stretched and upright riding position whereas the Fat Bob® is more relaxed. This is due to the handlebars but also the foot controls. The handlebars are an easy swap. The foot controls are an easy swap with the Street Bob®, but that is not the case with the Fat Bob® due to the different exhaust design.

Which Is the Right Bike for You

Perhaps the best place to start when comparing the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Street Bob® 114 vs 2022 Harley-Davidson® Fat Bob® 114 is with your budget. The Fat Bob® does cost more, but the inverted fork and some of the other features are nice additions depending on your preferences. If the Fat Bob® is outside your budget, then you can choose the Street Bob® with the confidence that you’re really not sacrificing that much. Something else to consider is if you’re intending to a do a heavy build. If you are, then the lower price tag and more minimalistic design of the Street Bob® likely makes more sense.

Making It Yours

Both bikes have a blacked-out appearance, but the Fat Bob® has a bronze-look exhaust system. In both cases, the Vivid Black color scheme is included in the sticker price. The Fat Bob® offers one premium color: White Sand Pearl. The Street Bob® offers three: Gauntlet Gray Metallic, Redline Red and Fastback Blue. Both models are supported well through the H-D® catalog, and as mentioned, if you intend to do a lot of customization, then the Street Bob® is likely the blanker canvas.
