2022 Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™ vs 2022 Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight®

Our location boasts one of the largest and diverse inventories of new and pre-owned Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Our team can also assist you with trade-ins, financing, insurance, extended coverage and the entire H-D® catalog of parts and accessories. Among our most popular motorcycles are the Iron 883™ and the Forty-Eight®, and in that spirit, let us compare the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™ vs 2022 Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight® and see what makes them shine.

Harley-Davidson® Cruisers

The Cruiser family is among the most important in the Harley-Davidson® lineup. They’re beloved because they speak to the tradition of the brand but also reflect modern innovations. Cruisers include some of the most affordable bikes that the brand offers. They all drip iconic Harley-Davidson® cool while being fun and comfortable to ride. You’ll find high performance as well. But it never comes at the cost of that ease, and these bikes are just as at home in urban environments as they are out on the open road.

Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™ is the most affordable motorcycle in the Harley-Davidson® lineup. Cruisers are quintessential American motorcycles, and the Iron 883™ is a quintessential cruiser. It oozes with tradition and boasts a legendary silhouette. It also features a minimalistic design, which is fantastic as is but also opens up a lot of opportunity for you to make the Iron 883™ uniquely yours. It’s a blast on the open road. Its size makes it a great choice as an urban rider, and all of these factors combine to make it an excellent option for new enthusiasts, riders of all sizes and both men and women.

Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight®

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight® shares much in common with the Iron 883™. The biggest difference is that the Forty-Eight® has a 1,200cc engine, but we’ll discuss that more when we talk about the Iron 1200. Another notable difference is that the Forty-Eight® has a beefier front end and wider tires, which not only changes the look of the bike but alters how it feels when riding. The handlebars and the foot control orientation differ as well and provide the Forty-Eight® more of a hot rod feel than the Iron 883™.

Riding Characteristics and Performance

The profile of the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™ is a bit lower than the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight®. Both configurations put the rider into a forward riding position, but as mentioned, the Iron 883™ has mid-mounted foot controls whereas the Forty-Eight® has forward-mounted controls. The Forty-Eight® also has the peanut fuel tank, which means less fuel and thus about 40 less miles per tank. Some enthusiasts consider the Iron 883™ to be a more universal setup that will be suitable for most. The Forty-Eight® has a more specific setup that will be perfect for some but for less riders overall.

What About the Iron 1200

Among the most notable differences when comparing the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Iron 883™ vs 2022 Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight® is the engine. While both have an air-cooled Evolution, the Iron 883™ has an 883cc engine whereas the Forty-Eight® has a 1,200cc engine. If that difference is important to you and you prefer the Iron, then the good news is that you have the option of the Iron 1200. It does cost a bit more but is essentially the same bike except for the fact that it has the more powerful engine.

Making It Yours

There are many customization options available through the Harley-Davidson® catalog, and these are two of the most popular models due to their prices and classic designs. It is another reason why these bikes and the Iron 883™ in particular are a good choice for new riders. As you learn what you like and what you don’t, you can customize the bike to you until perhaps the time comes to upgrade.
